Assault Suits Valken is an intense action game by Nippon
Computer System (NCS). The Axis colonies and the Earth Federation
are at war. The player takes control of Jake from the Federation
and his large mecha. His main weapon is a weak but multi-directional
Vulcan gun and his iron fists, but a shield can also be used at any
time by holding the right shoulder button. This combination adds a
lot of strategy to the game, the mech becoming virtually invincible
when protected. You will find yourself dashing to cover, precisely
timing your counter-attack and the right time to open fire and
blow your opponent to bits, especially as weapons like the Vulcan
gun needs to be reloaded when empty. Your mech can obviously be
powered-up and has access to an arsenal of weaponry: missiles,
napalm, laser etc...The seven game missions are fast paced and
Assault Suits Valken offers tons of intense and memorable
moments. As a side note, the game plot in the American version was
changed and most of the dialogs and cutscenes removed
(I even read somewhere that one of the ending was also omitted).

Assault Suits Valken is the second episode of a long series of
games by NCS which started on the Sega Megadrive in 1990 with Assault
Suits Leynos ( Target Earth in America ). Metal Warriors,
also for the Super Famicom is considered by some as the follow up of
Assault Suits Valken, but it is not related to the Assault Suits
series of games. however, Assault Suits Leynos 2 appeared
much later, in 1997, for the Sega Saturn system and Assault
Suits Valken 2 for the Sony Playstation in 1999. A new
version was released in 2005 for the
Playstation 2, Assault Suits Valken Zero is
a remake and highly improved version of Assault Suits Valken.

Teaser text from the American version:
2065 AD, The nations of Earth have once again split into two major powers. The
line dividing there new arch enemies reaches as fas as the lunar frontier, where axis
forces have constructed a moon base capable of launching monolithic intergalactic
battle cruisers.
To thwart this threat, a covert strike team consisting of the marines' elite
Cybernator force has been mobilized. The Cybernator is a giant mechanical warrior
controller by a marine who sits in the command cockpit withing the unit's chrimium
cranium. Nuclear Fission Thrusters allow the Cybernator to wreak total havoc while
soaring from ground zero to the infinity of space.
Your mission is to take command of the Cybernator and confront the most
powerful enemy ever to explore onto the Super NES scene. You'll face awesome
display of graphic destruction and realistic carnage so intense you'll feel compelled
to run and hide. The sound effects alone will make your guts shake as if they were
in front of a cranked-up heavy metal concert speaker.
But you must fight on, toughing in ou through 7 war zones stretching from the
moon, through the expanses of space, to the fringes of Earth's fragile atmosphere.
Crush Axis Cybertroops. Find your way through a dar mountain maze with only
your wits and a small light. And capture power-ups that you can allocate to the
Cubernator's four different weapon systems. Until you accomplish your mission.
Or have your nuts and bolts splattered from here to eternity.

Assault Suits Valken is an amazing experience and is at
the top of my list of action games for the Super Famicom system.
The gameplay is excellent, it takes some time to get used to it,
but it quickly becomes second nature. The game has a great
atmosphere, and there are no downbeats, the action is fast and
intense. The game proposes very nice and detailed graphics and stages
are extremely well designed. Finally, as an added feature, the game
has two endings! If you like challenging mech combats and action pack
titles, Assault Suits Valken should be yours ! My advice is
to go for the Japanese original game, the American version being
somehow 'vandalized'.
