Puzzle game

Here is a game from Compile's famous Puyo Puyo series. But here, rules have slightly changed, hence the name Nazo Puyo instead of Puyo Puyo ( Nazo meaning 'enigma' or 'riddle' in Japanese). First of all, puzzles are still present in this version but the player has to visit small towns and challenge its inhabitants in Puyo battles. When a group of characters is defeated, it is time to play against the master Puyo keeping the entrance to the next level. An interesting twist has also been added to the original Puyo Puyo's rules. Each stage ask the player to futfill a certain task, like clean up all beans only using a limited amount of Puyos, or only Puyos of a specific color. This can be tricky and challenging for any non-japanese speaking player, those conditions being explained at the beginning of each puzzle in japanese. And some of the later tasks can be hard to figure out, like the chain-reactions or groups or Puyos that need to be erased at the same time. The game can be played in Story mode (where the player can either play as Rulue or Arle who will travel the world looking for the ultimate Curry recipie) or a Puzzle mode giving you a countless amount of puzzles to solve. A Nazo Puyo Editor is also available for any player wanting to create new puzzles.

Nazo Puyo is an interesting variation of Puyo Puyo's series of games and several titles were released. The first two were available for Sega's Game Gear : Nazo Puyo (1993) and Nazo Puyo 2 (1993). Then Nintendo's Super Famicom saw two titles : Super Nazo Puyo: Ruruu no Ruu (1995) and Super Nazo Puyo Tsuu: Ruruu no Tetsuwan Hanjyouki (1996).

See Puyo Puyo CD (Pce-SCDRom˛) for more information about Puyo Puyo series of games.

Super Nazo Puyo is very confusing at first, especially if you do not read japanese well. But once you get over it, the game becomes much more challenging and interesting than any other Puyo Puyo titles, forcing the player to use more brain power than ever before, the game being more oriented towards puzzle solving than Puyo stacking. Super Nazo Puyo won't be every player cup of tea, but it certainly is a great variation of the Puyo Puyo genre.
