Norferatu is a creepy side-scrolling action game by Seta,
featuring many kind of blood feeding vampires and other warewolf monsters. The players
takes control of Kyle who has decided to rescue his beloved girlfirend
Erin from the hands of the evil vampire Nosferatu. Everything starts
inside a dark and humid cell and our character will have to escape and start on a long
journey up to Nosferatu's castle.
Hopefully, a passageway hidden in the ground allows you to run away... but not so
far and he will quickly encounter his first enemy in a shape of a slow zombie like
humanoid monster. The game counts many traps, puzzles to solve and a great deal of
monsters to defeat. You start off the game with only the ability to punch your
enemies. However, special red crystals can be collected on the way (often on defeated enemies)
to upgrade your abilities and trigger powerful combos and other kick
attacks. Other crystals can also be found and have different powers. Green ones, usually hidden in chests,
give you some life, or other blue crystals will extent you maximum life.
Kile can run, jump, grab onto
a ledge or slide unde tinny gaps in the ground. Norferatu counts six
huge non-linear and time limited stages with mini-bosses and a
tougher and nastier boss waiting at the end of each of them. The game offers
infinite continues but sadly no saving option.

Norferatu is a sort of a mix between Prince of Persia and
Castlevania. Graphics are very well drawn, creepy and very detailed,
especially enemies and environments. The animation is also very smooth
and reminds Prince of Persia which is a good sign. However, another
side of the game is the hard learning curve, and I wished the game creators
hadn't included a time limit for every stage ! Anyway, some traps just can
not be avoided the first time you play, you have to know they are there.
Then enemies are incredibly tough, especially bosses. But they are gorgeous,
the Warewolf in the first stage starts as a (yet creepy) human and slowly transforms into
the terrible beast as the moon gets full. As I already said, this game
reminds me prince Of Persia in places, with smooth animations
but also for the random controls where Kyle just keep missing the same
ledge again and again, and just doesn't seem to stop running when you
want him to. But the non-linear level design, overall ambiance
and graphics remind somehow Castlevania. Norferatu is an
extremely hard but very enjoyable game. A saving function would have
been welcome though...
