Neugier Umi To Kaze No Kôdô is a cute Role Playing/Action
game reminding the likes of Legend of Zelda or Illusion of Gaia.
The game tells the story of Duke who is on a journey to return to his homeland.
Sometimes earlier, he heard that his country was under attacked by pirates and
he wanted to see in person what all the fuss is about. He will soon find out as
the ship on which he sailed will be boarded and attacked by pirates. Neugier
is not your traditional RPG and Wolfteam put a greater emphasis on
action. Duke can use his sword to defeat his enemies, or run
and jump to avoid them. He can also use a special hook, really handy to jump
over obstacles or grab and crack open chests. Special items can be found this
way and they include apples giving Duke some life back or hearts
expanding his life bar. The game counts six area with a boss waiting at
the end of each of them. Simple puzzles often stop Duke in his quest
and are generally easy to figure out (even without much knowledge of japanese).

Interestingly, Neugier Umi To Kaze No Kôdô was planned for release in 1993
in the United States as Journey Home: Quest for the Throne. But it never
made it to the shelves and a prototype certainly exists.

Neugier Umi To Kaze No Kôdô is an average but yet fun
action/adventure game. It is sadly really short and much too easy.
It can be finished in a little more than a couple of hours.
Any non-japanese speaking player will have fun with this title.
There is not much text and even so, it does not prevent the player
to enjoy his journey. I also personnaly like the speed of the scrolling,
Role Playing Games usually have a slow paste. But here, Duke
can run across rooms in the blink of an eye. It is far from being a
perfect and unavoidable title an hardcore RPG players will certainly
find it tastless and unchallenging, but Neugier Umi To Kaze No Kôdô
is nevertheless fun to play. If you can find it cheap, I would recommend it.
But don't pay full price for it.
