Mazinger Z is an action game based on the ultra-famous amd most influencial
japanese animation series aired in the seventies featuring classic and colorful
giant robots. Dr. Hell has decided to take over the world and his army
of robots bring terror and destruction everywhere they go. The player takes
controls of Mazinger Z, a powerful humanoid super-robot created by Dr. Kabuto
and piloted by the young Koji. The game starts in a devastated city and you will
quickly encounter Dr Hell's giant robots who will try to stop you. Mazinger Z has
special weapons and abilities. Like in the television series, it can use his fists
and punch his opponents, but also use special attacks like missiles, Eye-Photon Beams or the red wave-laser
shot from his chest. He can also launch his fists for long distance attacks.
But do not worry, they are well trained and automatically come back into place.
Enemies can also be grabbed and thrown away, or you can trigger special combo-attacks
if you keep punching them fast enough. The game counts six levels with animated cutscenes
inbetween each of them where the story unfolds. Each stage in sort of split in small areas where all enemies need
to be destroyed before Mazinger can carry on his journey to the stage's boss.

Mazinger Z (aka Tranzor Z in America) has probably created an entire
genre by itself and is certainly the ultimate influence to the japanese giant
super-robots. The story of Mazinger Z is quite complex. Dr. Kabuto
is a scientist who has found remains of an ancient advanced civilisation and
their technology. They discover the giant-robots and before they can fully
understand how they work, Dr Hell takes control of them and decides
to over-take the world.Dr kabuto then decides to also build a super-robot
to stop this terrible plot. Koji Kabuto, a teenager and
Kabuto's grandsons will become the pilot of this new powerful weapon :
the legendary Mazinger Z. Kabuto will later die and
Koji will look for revenge. This is the basic story line of
Mazinger Z which will of course deeply evolve. The characters w
ere created by Go Nagai back in 1972. He is also known for his
most famous work Devilman. They both became long-running animated
telesision series the same year due to their huge success in Japan.

I always love those classic japanese giant robots (Grendizer, aka Goldorak,
was quite big in France when I was a kid) and Mazinger Z is full of them.
Sadly the game is average. There are tons of different robots and graphics are
quite clear and detailed. But controls are a bit awkwards and I found the game
dynamic a bit slow. Add on top of that an unbalanced difficulty, mostly related
to the controls I must confess. Mazinger Z is also quite rare and sometimes expensive
but my advise would be not to rush for it. If you like classic
japanese robots, this game can be a nice experience ( or a nice curiosity piece ),
not the best I must say, but still quite enjoyable.
