Magic Sword is a side-scrolling action game and is the conversion
of Capcom's own arcade released in 1990. The players takes controls of a
barbarian looking warrior with a sword on a journey to defeat the evil
lord Drokmar. Things wouldn't be that difficult if he wasn't located at
the top of a huge tower counting not less than fifty floors. Do not worry, an option
at the beginning of the games allows the player to start on a higher
storey. Keys are spreaded along your way and they can be used to either
open doors and to access next floor stair-cases, or open chests and
retieve special items or trigger a surprise ambush. One originality
of the game is also to free partners, usually by unlocking their jail cells,
who follow you like 'options' do in a shooter. You can only have one at
the time, but they are varied ( 8 in total ) and each of them have
their own skills and weapons: Big Man, Knight, Ninja, Priest, Amazon, Wizard,
Lizard Man and Thief. A special attack can also be triggered at anytime
and clean up a big portion of the screen in exchange of some of
your life. The game is called Magic Sword and indeed, your
character's sword is magic. It automatically charges during the game and throw fireballs.
Also, after completing a few floors, the players will have to defeat
a boss and, if victorious, gain a new and powerful sword. Just make
sure you do not drop it though.

Magic Sword is a good looking game, with detailed graphics
and smooth animation and definitively displays Capcom's touch. I
also quite like the structure of the game, reminding me somehow of
Rogue : Counteless floors with treasure chests and tons
of items and monsters, minus the randomly generated levels though. However
the game suffer from terrible
slowdowns, especially during those floors when flying snakes
composed of multiple parts try to knock you down. Floors
have some variations and the same designs are reused many
times in the game with different colors. They become somehow repetitive
but enough details have been added to keep the player surprised.
This title is not a huge game but I often get back to it just to
waste half an hour slashing and slicing crippled mummies and
multi-headed flying dragons.
