Role Playing game

Compile's Madō Monogatari takes the famous Puyo Puyo franchise and give it a new and original twist. No puzzles and cute ascending Puyos anymore. Madō Monogatari is instead a (simple) 2D overhead Role Playing Game featuring most of the characters from the series. Arle, the cute little girl so familiar to anyone who played the Puyo Puyo series of game, embarks on a quest. Everything starts when she receives a mysterious letter and goes on a long journey where she will learn magic and retrieve eight gems. The game follows a traditional structure with towns where new items and equipment can be found. Turn based fights are randomly triggered during the game. However, unlike traditional RPGs, our character can only uses magic spells, like fireballs, lightnings or confusion spells throwing cute dancing flowers at your enemy. Another originality of the game is to not display any health meter. Instead, Arle's status can be guessed by just looking at how she moves during battles, and the expression on her face.

Madō Monogatari is a very interesting and unusual game. If you are a Role Playing hardcore player, I would advice you to just walk away and ignore it. Story is very simple and does not compare to any big RPG available for the Super Famicom system. The game has cute and silly graphics but feels like it was designed for a young audience. Be warned, it is also designed for a young japanese audience and you will need strong japanese basics to enjoy the game in full. All in all, it is a charming and cute title on the outside but sort of hollow in the inside. But I personnaly kind of like it and it definitively brings something new and fresh to the genre.
