Lode Runner Twins is a cute platform game by T&E Soft, based
on Brøderbund's famous franchise. The player controls a young knight
(or a priestess) who's mission is to explore all the magic caves located
underneath the kingdom's castle. Their first task is to retrieve all the
candies stolen by some grey little devils. Like with any traditional Loderunner
game, each level feature multi-level platforms connected with ladders
and horizontal ropes. Interestingly, the game can either be played
in full-screen (press Select) or with a head-up-display taking
half of the screen-space. Our hero can also dig holes using their magic
and trap (or slowdown) the various monsters wondering around each area.
However, they only disappear if the hole happen to collapse on them
and get automatically regenerated somewhere in the stage. And watch out,
players can also fall in those holes and they will be unable to climb back out.
When all the candies (and various items) are collected, a ladder appears
somewhere in the level and must be climbed to exit. Lode Runner Twins
features several play modes: Story gets the player to explore
countless stages (10 areas and 100 stages) and the game's progress can
be saved using simple passwords, Free Play gives tons of levels to
explore in not specific order, and finally, it also features an intense
horizontal split-screen two players battle mode.

Lode Runner Twins is a fun little platform game. Graphics and
animations are cute and well made. Stages are a bit too linear though,
and difficulty is unbalanced. Enemies AI is awfully basic and your opponents
often just blindly follow our heroes. And this can become really tricky,
especially when they get stuck at the bottom of the ladder you desperately
try to climb on. Then, they never really die and always regenerate,
often coming back faster than you can kill them... Despite those flaws,
Lode Runner Twins is fun. Do not expect anything groundbreaking
though. The two-players battle mode can be fun and the password
system really helps out the game's replayability. An average but
yet correct title.
