Ikari no Yousai is a top-down overhead shooter featuring a heavy armed character who's given task is to infiltrate a science laboratory and find out what happened there, where are those hostile aliens coming from and what are those weird devices spreaded around every stages. The player is first armed with a single vulcan gun and a triple direction laser. But more sophisticated weaponery and items will later be available, like a flamethrower or a reflective laser. As the game progresses, maps of the visited areas reveal their secrets and special booths will give the player clues on what exactly happened in the station (through simple animated cut-scenes). But Ikari no Yousai is more than a shooter, the game counts many puzzled and some areas can be unlocked only with a specific weapon or item.

Ikari no Yousai was also released for Nintendo's Game Boy in 1991 and a sequel called Ikari no Yousai 2 followed in 1992. Even if they were also overhead shooters produced by Jaleco, they do not seem completely releated to the Super Famicom version.

Ikari no Yousai is not an amazing title but it is still a decent game. I personnaly like how the story unfolds as you progress through the game. Even the japanese version is easy to understand, cut-scenes do not use any text. Later stages become quite challenging too, with hidden switches which need to be triggered with the flameThrower or the reflective lasers. This title offers much more than a simple and dumb 'shoot and blast' experience. Graphics look alright, they are detailed and crisp but do not look for anything amazing here and they even feel a bit dated in places. Finally, I still wonder why the game was named Operation Logic Bomb in America...
