Released in America as GRADIUS 3
( SNS-G3-USA )

Gradius 3 first came out as an arcade game in 1989 and Konami
converted it for the Super Famicom the following year. The Vic-Viper
is back in service and ready to go through hell and back.
The weapon system, despite using the same structure as any Gradius
game, is probably the first one to offer a fully customizabe configuration.
From the start, the player has a choice of four different missiles,
doubles, Lasers, Shields and Specials.
Specials, symbolised by an exclamation mark, are probably
the most interesting feature in this game. They can either trigger
a Speed Down, Full Options, Full Barried
and Mega Crush. The power-ups system is also the usual
Gradius type and player must collect flying pods and
accumulate them. They can then be exchanged for new weaponery
at anytime during the game. Stages follow the usual Gradius
structure starting with an original first level filled up with
sand. Stages are varied and full of surprises, without forgetting
the now traditional Easter Island Heads and also a nice homage to
Salamander and its lava-tunnels. The game also counts several
secret stages.

Teaser text from the American version:
SOMETHING NASTY IS GOING AROUND AND THE WHOLE UNIVERSE IS CATCHING IT!
The gentle Gradians thought they were cured of Bacterion's contemptible
curse after generations of germ-free living. Guess again. That wreched fiend
is once again wreaking havoc on Gradius and the surrounding planets. It's
your destiny to put an end to it. Unless maybe you think life as an amoeba
would be pleasant!
You play a key role in engineering your M.A.X. starship's battle gear and
arsenal. You'll use masterful marksmanship and strategy to engage the right
weapon at the right time, like spread bombs, ripple lasers, photon torpedos,
mega crush and much more. Do so and you'll gallantly conquer the galactic
gargoyles and obstacles in ten Terror Zones, such as the Dunes of Doom,
Bacterion's Garden, and The Greased Lightning Round. Just when you think
you've made it through each of the Zones, you'll be greated by a hideous
Mayor who will try to see that his Zone is your last. Choose from three
difficulty levels to see just how keen your alien zapping skills are.
Throughout your journey, you will be engulfed in magnificent stereo sound
and stunning visual effects that will dazzle your senses.
In the final forum, you'll have to be as tough as Orakian ore to confront
Bacterion and disintegrate its hailstone of a heart. If you do, all that is good
in the universe will breathe a sigh of relief. And if you don't, you'll hear
the echo of a solitary clap and the final Dark Curtain will fall.

Gradius 3 is an awesome game. There is a caveat
though. The game is extremely hard and suffer from atrocious
slowdowns (probably the worse I have ever seen in a shooter).
It is very annoying to loose all the painfully accumulated
weapons and power-ups (especially speed-ups) as soon as you
die. Simply put, just turn off the console and start again if
you happen to die against a boss in later stages. Despite
those frustrating flaws, Gradius 3 is an amazing
shooter full of intense and fun moments. I recommend it
but be aware of its difficulty level.
