Darius Force is another episode of the famous Darius series of horizontal shooters by Taito. This one, however, is not converted from an arcade game but is an original version especially created for the Super Famicom system (Same as Darius Twin). As usual, your ship has three different systems than can be upgraded separately : main gun, side missiles and shields. Each of them can be powered by collecting either Red, Green or Blue floating orbs, and all of them are lost when you lose a life. The game offers varied levels and the usual choice at the end of each of them. However, the game only counts 15 stages in total. Finally, Darius Force can only be played in solo, in certainly lacks a two players mode.

Game story from the introduction sequence:
Since early man first discovered the ability to use weapons, made from the bones of his kill, he has fought for survival. A long time has passed since the war with "Berser" and the names of those heroic warriors have long been forgotten. On this day, History is about to repeat itself. It's a long saga of war and man's perpetual fight for survival.

I do not know the obscure reason why Darius Force was called Super Nova in America. Anyway. I am a Darius-phile and always loved the series, especially some of the last episodes like Darius Gaiden or G-darius. Darius Force is decent but this episode doesn't bring much to the Darius series. We can encounter there unusual bosses, like the great Chameleon boss or a giant robotic snail. All in all, I personnally find in better than Darius Twin, and it can be considered as a good shooter if taken out of the Darius context. Only some of the music tracks bother me, especially the one that can be heard in the first stage.
