Demon's Blazon is a platform/adventure game for the Super famicom system.
Red-Arremer (aka Firebrand), the hero of the game, is a red flying demon who will most
certainly look strangely familiar for anyone who played Capcom's other ultra-famous game
Makai Mura ( aka Ghosts 'n Goblins). His mission is to collect six stolen
crests ( Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Time and Heaven ). On the contrary of Makai Mura,
the game is far from being linear. After the first stage, Red-Arremer will be able to fly
over a pseudo-3D map and pick a new destination. Levels unlock as it goes but a couple
seems to always be available at the same time. Shops and special stores are also located
on the map and can be accessed at any time. Red-Arremer's first ability is to use fireballs.
He can also fly, or rather hang in the air. He can also use magic spells and magic potions
which can be collected along the way and usually symbolized by either a scroll or an empty
bottle. Red-Arremer can also transform into a new demon when a new crest is collected.
This will allow him to get stronger, but also to use new abilities and most of the time
reach new areas, defeat bosses or get around problems. They are also the reason for
re-visiting old levels, you never know what you may find there. Other items are also
spread around, like the health orbs adding an extra slot to your health bar
(The game counts a total of 20) . Money can also be collected and spent in the shops
mentioned earlier. You can either buy new spells or potions. Finally, and not the
least, five rare talismans can also be collected and will offer special attacks and
effects. Your progress can be saved using a sixteen character password, but keep in
mind that all your money, potions and spells will be lost if you do so...

Demon's Blazon is somehow the sequel of two existing titles featuring the red demon.
The first one was Red Arremer (aka Gargoyle's Quest in the west) for the Game
Boy and released in 1990. Red Arremer II (aka Gargoyle's Quest II) was later
released for the Famicom system in 1992. Demon's Blazon can be considered as the
third opus to the Red Arremer series of game. Those games are also highly related
to Makai Mura (aka Ghosts 'n Goblins), Red Arremer being one of
the evil demon Arthur had to defeat. Red-Arremer was also a selectable character
in the arcade game SNK vs Capcom ( 2003 ) and in Namco x Capcom (PlayStation 2, 2005).

Game's story from the American documentation:
Many, many years ago it was a time of fantasy and intrigue. Legends
passed from generation to generation. People loved to spin takes of great
warriors rising up against the tyrannical forces of those who ruled. One such
legend spoke of a world that was once divided into two different lands.
The two realms existed in harmony: one ruled by humans, the other ruled
by demons. There was rarely conflict between the two realms until one
fateful day. Six magical stones fell from the sky intos the demon's realm.
Inscribed on the stones were the Crests of Fire, Earth, Air, Water, Time
and Heaven. These crests, when united, would grant unimaginable power.
Soon the demons began to fight over these magical crests. The demon
realm erupted into civil war. The land was in turmoil over the stones until finally
one red demon emerged with five stones by defeating the others.
This demon was known as Firebrand. Firebrand was not satisified that
possessing the Crests of Fire, Earth, Air, Water and Time would end the war.
He then challenged the Demon Dragon for the Crest of Heaven. After a
long and desperate battle, Firebrand slayed the Dragon and gained the
final Crest. But the price of victory was high. Firebrand was critically
wounded. Firebrand also did not realize that while he was obtaining
the Crests, his success only moved him closer to failure. The
jealous demon Phalanx secretly trailed Firebrand and waited for
just the right moment.
"I have defeated the Red Demon!" Phalanx cried.
"I shall reign supreme ! With the power of the Crest,
both the demon world and the human world are mine!"
Firebrand vowed revenge on Phalanx. Phalanx was clever, though.
He separated the crests in case someone did rise up to challenge the
power he possessed. And now someone has risen to the challenge. The legend
of Firebrand is about to unfold in the search of the Demon's Crest!

Demon's Blazon, as usual with Capcom, has amazingly detailed and
colorful graphics. The game is also huge, with tons of hidden areas and secrets.
The concept is actually closer to a mix of Konami's Castlevania and Capcom's
Megaman. Level design is also gorgeous, with spooky Gothic backgrounds
and huge bosses. What amazed me the most is how the game starts - our character
faces a huge undead-dragon and has to fight his way out, straight from the
beginning ! Do not worry, it is an easy task when you know the beast's weak
point, but the first time you'll certainly die a few times. I also like the game's overall
story : Red-Arremer has to stop a second war against the humans and the first one was actually
won by Arthur at the end of his epic journey in Makai Mura. Capcom
did here a really good job at connecting all the games together. The only bad
point of the game is the saving system and the fact that you lose all your money
and spells when you want to save your game's progress... I wish Capcom had put a battery-backup in the cartridge. All in all,
this game is a real masterpiece, one of Capcom's finest.
