The Belser's evil empire and its army of fishy looking ships are back.
The planet Darius faces a certain doom and only the pilots Proco and Tiat,
on board of their Silver Hawks, can save the day. As the game is supposed
to take place thousand of years after the first Darius, their trained
descendants are more likely to be the ones nominated to fight the alien invasion.
Anyway, each ship has the usual Darius three-weapons system : a front laser powered
up by red pods, a side gun powered by green pods and a Shield powered up
by blue pods. Just like any other title of the series, Darius Twin
counts a total of twelve zones and branching routes give the player
the ability to pick his own path of action through a total of seven stages
(there is only one final stage though). They all end with all kind of
aquatic bosses, from giant fish-machines to turtles, squids, sea-horses
and even a robotic sea-lion. Unlike other games of the series, the Silver Hawk
doesn't lose all its power-ups when shot down and like the title seems
to imply, a two simultaneous player mode is available.

Darius Twin was the first Darius incarnation for the Super Famicom
system and it is overall really disappointing. The biggest issue with this title
are the long and monotonous stages - enemy formations often fly by your ship without
much conviction. This has always been my problem with Darius games in general,
it's like if stages are just thrown in to kill time between the astonishing boss
battles. I however find Darius Twin hard despite the fact that you don't lose
all your weaponry when killed - but you only get a handful of lives to go over the
whole game which isn't much... the first half of the game is a breeze but the second
part is quite tough. That is, the original game expected you to loose all your
weapons so stages were designed to hit the "right" difficulty balance and players could
still get through the game without the best power-ups. In Darius Twin you
have to collect all the power-ups or your ship will just end up being useless in later stages.
