Batman Returns is a side-scrolling beat'em up developed and
published by Konami. It is based on the movie of the same name,
directed by Tim Burton and released in 1992. The Penguin
(teamed up with Cat-Woman) and his minions from the Red Triangle Circus Gang
plan to take over Gotham City and only Batman can stop them.
The game takes the player through seven areas all based around scenes from the
original film. Like in any traditional beat'em up, Batman can punch
and kick his opponents, jump or just guard. However, unlike other beat'em up,
he can also use his Bat-Boomerang to hit his enemies from afar or his
Bat-Grappling-Hook to swing around the screen. Finally, he can unleash
some powerful combos and lift enemies up in the air by their neck and throw
their bodies against walls other other foes. Finally, a special attack, in
exchange of some life, gets the Dark Knight to use his cape to
escape desperate situations. The game has a lot more to offer and specia
l bonus stages are thrown in, such as a fast and furious Bat-Mobile race
or more traditional 'platforming' sections where Batman uses his
Bat-Boomerang rather than his fists.

Batman Returns was released for various systems of the time. The Super Famicom
version tested here is arguably the finest and the other games
have not much in common with it. They came out for the Master System (Sega, 1989),
Game Gear (Sega, 1992), Lynx (Atari, 1992), PC Computers (GameTek, 1992),
Megadrive and Sega CD (Sega, 1993) and NES (Konami, 1993).

Video games based on movie franchises are rarely good and often look
and feel cheap - they are usually the ones to steer clear of. But Konami
is not 'any game company' and Batman Returns is a gem, one of the
best beat'em up available for the Super Famicom system.
Graphics are excellent with very large sprites and an incredibly smooth animation.
All the visited eras are also beautiful with rich and detailed environments.
But, most of all, it is in the gameplay department that the game really shines
- controls are simple, effective and flawless (the game is on the difficult side though).
Batman'sa attacks are not limited to punches and kicks and stages have
interesting twists to them (like various platform sections where Batman
has to use his Bat-Boomerang). The level of detail in the game is also incredible.
The only down points are the weak cutscenes that are directly taken fro
m the movie (but they do not affect the rest of the game in any ways) and
the lack of a two-player mode. All in all, Batman Returns is a finely crafted game.
