Arkanoid: Doh It Again is an upgraded version of the ultra-famous game Arkanoid released by Taito. The original concept was highly inspired from Atari's Breakout, but with more depth and content. The alien Doh, symbolized by an enigmatic and giant head somehow similar to the MPC'core in Disney's Tron, menaces the universe again and prevents space-ships to colonize distant planets. The player takes control of a scout ship called Vaus, which is curiously shaped like a paddle. The goal of the game is to clean up every bricks on the screen with your energy ball, and this through not less than around hundred stages. But things are not so easy. Not all bricks have the same properties, some just disappear when hit, others need a number of hits and some are just indestructible. They may also drop power-up cells that give the player new weapons or new abilities : extra-life, laser-gun, multiple-balls, enlarge or shrink your paddle, thunder-shield etc... Every ten levels or so, the player will face a boss. The game can be played with a standard Super Famicom paddle (thanks to the L and R button which boost the paddle in one direction) but also with the mouse. Finally, a save option (using passwords) is available, without forgetting a neat level editor.

The first time I played Arkanoid was years ago, as a kid, and I clearly remember the first time I saw some advertising about it. No nead to say I was puzzled and was wondering, What is this game about ? even by looking at the screenshots I can not figure it out. Arkanoid is just great, and this upgrade probably offers all the features you ever wished for. Playing with a standard Super Famicom controller is quite tricky and the mouse is probably a much better choice (if you happen to own one though). However, the game is full of surprises and Taito has packed here enough stages to keep any fan of the series satisfied. The game is a classic and is still very addictive, even after all those years.
