Here is the convertion of the very colorfull arcade game released by
Konami in 1991. Detana! Twin Bee is a vertical shoot'em up with very
cute graphics, musics and sound effects. The Queen sends you a distress signal,
her world is attacked by all sort of nasty creatures and your mission is to stop them.
Main characters are cute flying ships with a pair of tinny arms allowing them to
also drop bombs and hit enemies on the ground in a way similar to Namco's famous Xevious.
Weapons can be upgraded by shooting at smiling clouds. They'll drop bells which, if
shot again, will change color and give up various special powers : shield, speed-up,
multiple lasers, flying options ... A powerful Fire-blast can be charged up by
holding the fire button for a few seconds. Even a Green TwinBee can give you a hand and help you
if you know where to find him ! Finally, a two simultaneous player mode is available
too and both players can join forces and achieve special attacks.

The PC Engine version of Detana ! TwinBee comes with a set of stickers
(pictured on the left) and features all the main characters from the game.
What ? I haven't presented them yet ? Me bad. Your will find Princess Melora, the
one calling our heroes to the rescue. Then Light, the boy who pilots
TwinBee and Pastel the red haired girl who pilots Winbee.
The green Gwinbee is also included in the family picture at the
bottom-left.

Twin Bee is a highly popular series of games by Konami, or at least in japan,
which started in the arcades back in 1985. Twinbee 'the first' is a vertical shooter
inspired by other great masterpieces of the time like Namco's Xevious. However, all the elements that
made Konami's series famous were already there : cute flying characters with arms, flying bells
power-up system and the option for two players to unite and fire powerful attacks. This version
was of course converted for many home systems including Nintendo's Famicom and the MSX.
Moero! Twinbee: Cinnamon Hakasei wo Sukue (Aka Stinger in America) was released in
1988 and only for Nintendo's Famicom system (Cartridge and Disk Card). It is the only Twin Bee
title to feature horizontal scrolling stages (if we do not include Twinbee Rainbow Bell Adventure
which is more a platform game ). Then Twinbee 3: Poko Poko Dai followed again in 1989 and only for
the Famicom system. Detana Twinbee! then appeared in the arcades in 1991 and is a fantastic
upgrade of the series, the most popular and it introduced the great music tunes that will stick to
Twin Bee for ever. This version was converted for many home systems : X68000, PC Engine HuCard,
and later for Sony's Playstation and Sega's Saturn. Then, two years later, in 1993, the sequel to
Detana was released for the Super Famicom as Pop'n TwinBee. Then, the same year, Twinbee
characters used their legs for a change and became heroes of a platform game for the Super Famicom :
Twinbee Rainbow Bell Adventure.
The last shooter featuring the famous Twinbee ships is probably Twinbee Yahho!. This
title was released in 1995 in the arcades and was later available for Sony's Playstation and Sega's
Saturn consoles. Yahho! sort of commemorated the 10th anniversary of the series, I wished 2005
had been blessed by the 20th... but shooters are not fashionable anymore, even if cute.
The last twin Bee game released by Konami was a Role Playing game, and
this for Sony's Playstation in 1998. It was also the only Twin Bee game featuring 3D graphics.
Other Twin Bee titles appeared for different format : Twinbee Da! (GameBoy, 1990),
Twinbee Taisen Puzzle (Playstation, 1994). Konami also re-used their Twin Bee characters
in many games. The most famous is Parodius. But it is not the only one, they are also
featured in Wai Wai World 1 and Wai Wai World 2 for the Famicom system and in
Tokimeki Memorial ! Let's also not forget the countless Music CDs available in Japan.

Konami has blessed video game history with amazing shooters :
Gradius, Salamander and the less famous Parodius
and TwinBee. I have personnaly always loved TwinBee and
Detana Twinbee is a sort of 'rebirth' of the series. Curiously, I
always believe the yellow corn characters first appeared in this
game. But no. Pop'n TwinBee for the Super Famicom was probably
the first game to feature them. Anyway, this PC-Engine
version is very good, with lovely cute graphics, great music and, as usual
with Konami, superb gameplay and very very addictive overall. End of
level bosses are especially well designed. The game is not
as polished as the arcade, but yet Konami did an excellent work. I only wish it
was longer, the game counts six levels and is somehow easy to finish...
If you are a fan
of what some people call cute'em ups, this title will be pure
delight and should not be missed.
