Soldier Blade is the third and last Star Soldier game
from Hudson Soft released for the PC Engine system. It is a vertical
shoot'em up , your ship can collect three sorts of power ups:
Vulcan style gun (red), Laser (blue) and Laser-waves (green). When you
collect a bonus, a flying robot-pod (which can be also seen on the
game cover and title screen) follows you and shoot anything is sight.
A great originality of the weapon system is that you can store up
to three different power-ups. At any time, the current weapon can be
turned into a devastative bomb and clean up everything on screen (each
of them having their own way of doing so),
leaving place to the second stored weapon. As usual with any
Star Soldier game, stages are very long and this episode
counts seven of them, and some even have a middle-boss.

Soldier Blade was part of the Caravan Competition organised by
Hudson Soft in 1992 and a Special Version of the game exists. It is
probably the most common of all, despite being insanely rare. It
comes as a single HuCard and offers the usual Time Attack modes.
(See Super Star Soldier for more information about
the Caravan Competition).

missiong begins, all contact is lost. Suddenly, three
years later... the Fleet returns, but they have been

attack the earth. But no need to be flurried. Now the
time has come to "Soldier Blade." Equipped with a
miniature Bias Drive, the fight goes on ! You become a
member of the team "Super Interception Airforce", and

I personnaly think Soldier Blade is the best of the Star Soldier series.
Hudson Soft at his best. Shooting greatness. Better and amazingly detailed graphics,
awesome and varied levels, catchy music, gorgeous bosses and it has a (sort of) story
line ! It is such a nice touch to meet the main boss at the begining of the game who,
when beaten, flies off shouting "I'll be back!", and it does several times ! Once again, if you love
shoot'em up, Soldier Blade is a must have! Shame it is now so expensive though...
Soldier Blade is however not as intense and fast paced as Super Star Soldier,
we could describe it as a bit more "mature" shooter. I'm not sure if "mature" is
the right work though, it is hard to describe really. But a lot more work was
spent on level structure and design, but also "anticipation" before an enemy appears, like the huge tank in stage 3,
or the big red ship which
drops other ships in stage one and re-appears two stages later as a boss. Ok, I won't spoil
the game any longer. You see what I mean.
