Shooter / Horizontal

Parodius is a horizontal shooter and another great conversion from Konami.
The game features a parody of Konami's other titles including
games such as Gradius and Twin Bee.
Because of this, the power-up system is the same as Gradius: collect power-pods and use them
to 'purchase ' weapons and power-ups such as speed-ups, missiles, lasers, options, shields etc...
Furthermore, Twin Bee bells can sometimes appear and give the player temporary powers (loud speaker,
huge bomb, increase the size of the character etc...)
Players can pick a character from a list of four: a cute version of the Vic Viper from Gradius,
a pink octopus, twin bee and a Penguin (curiously, penguins are also the baddies in this
game...). Each character has of course his own set of power-ups and
weapons. Unlike the original Gradius, graphics are really cute and colorful and the music is
inspired from famous classical musics and remixed Gradius tunes.

Surprisingly enough the first Parodius game was released by
Konami for the MSX in 1988. The game was a shooter too and
featured characters like Takosuke the octopus, Pentarou the
Penguin, Goemon, Popolon and Vic Viper. In later Parodius game,
only the octopus, Penguin and Vic Viper are present. The penguin
comes from Antartic adventure, an early Konami game.
I don't really need to present Vic Viper, but it is the main
space ship from the excellent Gradius. Later, Konami added Twin Bee
characters to the series. Parodius Da ! first appeared in the arcades
in 1990, it was converted for many systems including the
Famicom (1990), GameBoy (1991) and SharpX68000 (1991). Notice
that the PC Engine version counts an extra stage. Gokujyou
Parodius! was released in the arcades in 1994. Once again
it got converted to many systems and was part of Parodius Da!
deluxe pack released for the Sega Saturn (1995) and
Playstation (1994), pack which contains the first two arcade games.
Sexy Parodius was released in 1996 and was converted for
SegaSaturn (1996) and Sony Playstation. It is considered as the
third in the Parodius games. Other versions (console only)
appeared like Chatting Parodius Live - forever with me
for SuperFamicom (1995), Playstation (1996) and SegaSaturn(1996)
or Paro Wars for the Playstation (1997). the latest
being a strategy game.

Konami has produced some of the best and most original shooters ever made, and Parodius is
no exception. It is pure fun. The PC-Engine version is really close to the arcade and
Super Famicom version. My only complain would go for the stages Konami simply missed out,
like the huge easter island flying heads. Despite this, the game is simply amazing ! if you like cute and funky
shooters, Parodius is right for you and shouldn't be missed.
