Puyo Puyo is a famous Tetris kind of puzzle game by Compile.
Multicolored gelatinous cute blobs, called Puyos fall from the top of
the screen. You have a short amount of time to change their
trajectory or rotate them around. They pile them up at the bottom
of the screen and groups of four or more will explode and
the remaining blobs will fall into the empty space. Each
player has its own playfield and you lose if one of your
pile touches the top of the screen. Special combos can
be done by creating chain reactions and flood your opponent
with a rain of Puyos. A two simultaneous players mode is of course available.

Puyo Puyo was initially released as an arcade game in 1992.
It was then converted for the Megadrive (1992), Famicom (1993),
SuperFamicom (1993) as Super Puyo Puyo , GameBoy but also
Msx and Sharp x68000.
Puyo Puyo 2 followed up in 1994 in the arcades, which got
converted for the MegaDrive(1994), GameGear(1994) and SuperFamicom(1995)
as Super Puyo Puyo 2. Then Puyo Puyo Sun appeared in the
arcades and was later converted for the SegaSaturn(1997). Tons of other
versions exist and it would be a long list, here are a few : Puyo Puyo 4
(SegaDreamcast, 1999) , Puyo Pop (NeogeoPocket, 1999), Minna
de Puyo Puyo( GameBoyAdvance, 2001), Waku Puyo Dungeon
(Playstation and Saturn). There are even Puyo Puyo stores in Japan !.
As a curious fact, Puyo Puyo was released in 1993 as 'Dr Robotnik's
Mean Bean Machine' by Sega for the Megadrive in Europe and USA...

Puyo Puyo is one of my favourite Tetris 'kind' of game with
the ultra addictive
Puzzle Bobble. I am not sure about this, but I am wondering if Compile
is not the first company to introduce battle modes in a Tetris
'like' game. Personnaly, I never really liked Tetris and I usually get
bored after a couple of minutes (sorry...) but the staff on
Puyo Puyo just added the right ingredients (and they go beyond the cute graphics)
that make this sort
of games so addictive : great cute characters, catchy tunes and a brilliant
story line. Compile brought us amazing shooters and still they have
managed to create the monument which is Puyo Puyo.
