Cotton is a cute horizontal shooter and is the conversion
of Success’s arcade game released in 1991. The player takes control of Cotton,
a young witch flying on a broom and accompanied by Silk,
a cute little fairy. She flies through seven long stages and her task is to return the
prisms of Light to the fairies - even if she has only one thing in
mind: candies.Consequently, Cotton believes throughout the
game that her mission is to look for stolen candies, and not magic gems.
Cotton’s main form of attack are
bombs she can drop on the ground or magic blast-beams she can fire
towards her. Holding the fire button for a couple of seconds can
unleash powerful magic attacks - Red Dragon Fire or
Blue Electrobolt. Unlike other shooters, power-ups are experience
based and slowly increase as she collects colored crystals dropped by
defeated enemies. Weird statues scattered throughout the game
usually hide a frozen-fairy who can be revived to join the party as
a flying option.

I do not know why, but I have always been attracted to
Cotton's series of games. Maybe because of the young witch,
maybe because of the broom, who knows - I was kidding about the broom.
I love shooters and I somehow like games that
try to be different and offer more than the usual spaceships,
space and Alien themes. Cotton is fun but why didn't I give
it the highest score of five stars ?... I personally think there
is something missing here but I can not put my finger on it.
Well, this is the sort of game that you can’t find anything wrong to
say about, but that still doesn’t manage to get the “Waaaooo!” feeling.
The game is fresh but stages are quite linear and the game lacks some
dynamic - Cotton’s attacks would have welcomed a couple more
bullets, even when the auto-fire is on things are rather slow.
Nonetheless, this is an outstanding conversion and in some
ways better than the original arcade game (better musics and speech
during the cutscenes).
Cotton is a charming shooter and one of the
best available for the PC Engine system.
