Shooter / Horizontal
|
Chô Aniki is a horizontal shooter and is the first opus of a
long series of unusual games by Masaya. Players can either
control the strong Idaten or the cute Benten. The
game gives its heroes the ability to fly allowing them to bore through
endless flow of enemies. The unlikely couple is on a mission to save
the World from a terrible invasion and stop the evil Bodî-Biru
and his body-builder contest and prevent him to steal all the galaxy's
protein.
The twin brothers Samson and Adon, two beefy flying body-builders
freshly freed from jail by our heroes, also join the party and help
them to fulfil their task. Both Idaten and Benten use
the same primary weapon which can be powered-up (or 'build-up' as
they say in the game) by collecting orange pods throughout the levels.
This weapon is their main form of attack - however bombs are also available and
a special attack can be unleashed by releasing the fire button.
Samson and Adon act as options, they can join our heroes
when called (through the use of icons scattered around the game) and deploy by their sides.
They simply fly towards any enemy within range and inflict damage - their
life is however finite and they will eventually die... Levels
are usually made of three of four sub-stages with elaborate mini-bosses
at the end of each one of them. Consequently, the loss of a credit gets the player to start
the whole area again...

Masaya produced a series of really weird games called
Chô Aniki. They are often categorized as 'homosexual' or
'sex weirdoz' games but they offer scarcely more at their core,
despite picturing muscled-body-builders and explicit content.
They are obviously very strange and unusual pieces of software, but they are
technically really impressive and usually offer a great soundtrack - the music was composed by
Koji Hayama who’s really popular in Japan and it is said that the CD sountrack
album even out-sold the game itself..The first game was Chô Aniki (Pce, 1993),
then Ai Chô Aniki was released in 1995,
followed by Chô Aniki Bakaretsu Rantôden (SuperFamicom, 1995),
Chô Aniki (Playstation, 1995)
Otoko No Konsatsu (WonderSwan, 2000)
and Chô Aniki Seiranu Protein (Playstation2, 2003)

Chô Aniki is known for its weird content but not for its qualities as a game -
I personally think it is one of the best shooter for the system. It’s impossible to
argue with how incredible and sophisticated the graphics of the game are.
They are crisp and their
design is smart and unique - especially for the intimidating and spectacular
bosses. Gameplay is also well balanced despite a rather weak weapon system. My only
complaint would go for the repetitiveness of some stages which end up using the
same enemy sprites over and over. Or the vicious checkpoints that make you start
a whole area again when you lose. The soundtrack is also what makes Chô Aniki
shine - even if some of them don’t really fit the action... All in all, Chô Aniki is
a game that shouldn’t be missed, but be aware of its love/hate Body-Building theme.
